A phone call can change your mood...

Two nights ago I was sitting at football practice, it had just stopped raining and I had woke Carter up because it was 7pm and he was napping in the car...um, he would NEVER sleep that night if I let him sleep longer!  He was cranky, the bugs were out in full force and I was in a tired cranky mood myself.  Then my phone rang..."Rickey" showed up, Melissa's husband...I was thinking "Oh shit...it's 7:30pm, he normally only calls before 10:00pm if something bad happens since he's with her in her room..."
"Helllllo?" I say, trying to keep my voice steady, expecting bad news.
"Hey.  Ready?  Listen to THIS!  Say hello..."
"Hello?" Then I hear...
"blah blah ahhhh blah maaa....." among other random sounds..."talk to her, Melissa, it's Danielle on the phone!" Rickey lets her know.
:::cue tears:::
I was hysterical...I was choking back trying to talk to her, and she kept making sounds, it was amazing.  First sounds she's made since this whole thing happened over TWO MONTHS ago...I still cry when I think about it two days later.  It was truly awesome.  He gets back on the phone to tell me that she had PT all day and he had just got up to see her (she's not allowed visitors during PT for the first week or so, including her husband) and when he walked in he heard the sounds, then noticed that they had capped her trach!  She was "communicating" for the first time!  He thought someone was messing with him at first...the noises couldn't be coming from Melissa, he sits with her every.single.day. and hasn't heard a peep out of her.  He broke down and started crying, called her mom, his mom and then ME so I can "talk" to her.  I am so grateful that he includes me in such wonderful, HUGE updates like that, it means the world to me.  So there she is now, breathing through her nose and her mouth, trying to talk.  I'm in awe at her strength and what she's overcome already.  She has done things that her original neurologists have said she never would.  My best friend is a total rock star.  I love her and miss her so much.
Please still keep her in your prayers, she's doing amazing, but still has a ways to go...

Thanks Karen :) She's still doing SO well this week! She's trying to mimic sounds and words now too, she's awesome. Long road ahead, but at least there is a light at the end!
